The Spanish language publication has raised more than $20,000 to fight against diabetes, a disease that affects more than 2 million Latinos living in the United States.

Los Angeles, CA- April 22, 2013- Diabetes is an incurable disease with consequences that can lead to further complications including kidney disease and premature death. To fight against this condition that affects 26 million people on the United States and 2 million Latinos, Spanish language magazine, El Clasificado, has joined in the efforts of the American Diabetes Association’s ‘Tour de Cure’ to raise more than one million dollars to fight the disease.

Presently, El Clasificado and 45 of its employees have already raised more than $18,000 toward their goal of $20,000 to lead all corporate donors. “We are very happy to be able to contribute what we can, although much more is needed, towards an effort fighting a disease that is now the fifth leading cause of death within the Latino community. This is the fourth year we will participate and we plan on continuing to do so in the future,” said Joe Badame, COO of El Clasificado, who, along with the contributing employees, will ride the Tour’s bike route from Long Beach to Palos Verdes, California on April 28.

For Julian Dillon, Director of Special Events for the American Diabetes Association, to be able to count on the support of editorial powerhouses in the Hispanic community such as El Clasificado is of great importance because “luckily there are things that can be done to control the disease and minimize the risk of suffering from greater complications in the future. However, one of the best ways to achieve this is by keeping the Hispanic community informed and El Clasificado’s ‘healthy-living’ editorials facilitate this objective.”

In addition, the ‘Tour de Cure’ strives to draw awareness to the 79 million people in the US that are at risk of being affected by this chronic disease. As part of this effort, at the Queen Mary starting point in Long Beach, riders will be offered free, healthy food, live music, kids activities, and, most importantly, opportunities to chat with experts on the latest treatments.

The event, which in previous years has been covered by leading Spanish language television networks such as Univision, will have special coverage on Thursday, April 25 through CNN Latino’s “Sin Limites” presented by journalist Elizabeth Espinosa at 8 pm on KBEH 63.

Participants can choose to complete either the 8, 11, 32, 61, or 100 mile bike routes. Those interested in participating in the “Tour de Cure” or donating to the cause, can visit tour.diabetes.org or call 1-800-DIABETES (1-888-342-2383).
