Los Angeles, CA – February 14, 2008 – Latin alternative rock publication Al Borde partnered with Ric Fazekas of Verdad Y Justicia record label on Saturday, February 9th to host the “Al Borde High School Journalism Day” – a free event for local high school students interested in a journalism career. About 120 students were transported to the exclusive Al Borde Lounge for a rare opportunity to connect with a stellar lineup of Hispanic media professionals.

Syndicated Columnist Gustavo Arellano (“Ask a Mexican”) and Syndicated Cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz (“La Cucaracha”) were among the six distinguished panelists who volunteered their time on Saturday afternoon to share their experiences and offer career advice and tips for landing a journalism job. In between the panel discussion and networking opportunities, the students were also treated to two live performances by local Spanish rock heroes Pastilla and ska sensations La Banda Skalavera.

The panel discussion coupled with not one but two live performances made the event a smash hit for the students as well as the adults. Lizzy from East Los Angeles’s Roosevelt High School immediately posted an entry in the school newspaper’s Rough Rider Blog, describing the experience as the second best day of her life. “It was amazing to get to know some journalists devoted to the Latin culture,” she asserted adding, however, that the “real fun” was in the musical lineup. “I had never heard of La Banda Skalavera before, but they were pure music genius.”

“We are elated to be the platform that offers such a unique, enriching opportunity to local students,” declared Adriana Hernandez, Senior Manager of Special Events for Al Borde. The organization plans to repeat the winning formula at least once more in the months ahead.

Participating high schools were Schurr in Montebello, Jordan in Watts, South East HS in South Gate, Roosevelt, Huntington Park HS, Whittier HS, and La Puente High. Event sponsor was SoBe Life Water.

The distinguished panelists were Mariluz Gonzalez, Public Relations Director at Fonovisa and President of Sour Pop Records; Josh Norek, VP, Business Affairs & Media Relations at Nacional Records, co-founder of Latin Alternative Music Conference, and vocalist for Hip Hop Hoodios; Marthin Chan, Host “Indie 101” MTVtr3s and guitarist for Volumen Cero; Omar “Boris” Ponce, Host & Producer “Galería Alternativa”; Lalo Alcaraz, Syndicated Cartoonist “La Cucaracha” and co-host of KPFK’s “Pocho Hour of Power”; Gustavo Arellano, Syndicated Columnist, “Ask a Mexican.”

Al Borde (www.alborde.com) is a free publication that reaches young and trend-setting 18- to 34-year-old Hispanics.
